If you haven’t noticed, I love sharing ideas for If you haven’t noticed, I love sharing ideas for small group activities. In fact, I’ll be presenting on this very topic at this year’s Summer Math Summit—a completely FREE online event for grades 3-12 math teachers, happening June 26-29th! ✨🎉

More details coming later this week, but here’s a sneak peek: this seasonal matching activity—featuring all four seasons—is included with your free ticket! 🎟️

Here’s how to create your own small group activity with these matching cards.

⭐️ Laminate and cut out the sets of matching clipart.

⭐️ Write math problems on the back of one set and the answers on the other.

⭐️ Save time by pulling problems directly from your teacher’s guide or textbook.

Here’s how to use it in small groups:

OPTION 1:
Lay the answer cards face down with the clipart showing. Display the question cards face up with the problems visible.

➡️ Students choose a problem card, solve it, then flip it over to reveal the image.

➡️ Next, they find the card with the matching image, flip it to check the answer, and see if it’s a match.

➡️ If they’re correct, they move on to the next card. If not, they use error analysis to rework the problem.

➡️ Set a goal for students to find 3–4 matches, depending on the complexity of the skill.

OPTION 2:
The concept is the same, but the setup is slightly different: arrange BOTH sets of cards with the clipart face down. This way, students only see the math problems and answers—keeping the images a surprise until they check their match.

In this version, students solve a problem and then find the card labeled with their answer. They flip both cards over, and if the images are a match, their answer is correct!

And just like that, you’ve created a custom matching game! 🎉 I can’t wait to share even more engaging small group activities with you during the Summer Math Summit!

Registration is currently open, so if you’re interested in earning your summer PD credits in the comfort of your own home, comment “info” and I’ll send you the link! 🔗

Comment “anchor chart” and I’ll send you the Comment “anchor chart” and I’ll send you the link to this area and perimeter anchor chart! 🔗

Here’s a mistake I used to make with anchor charts—they focused only on the steps to solve a problem.

That can be helpful when students are just given the numbers, but it falls short with word problems. Context is everything! Without it, students often struggle to choose the correct operation.

If you’ve made this mistake too, here’s one simple shift: start by answering the question “When would I use this in real life?”

So when teaching area and perimeter, make sure your anchor chart includes real-world examples:

⭐️ Area = inside (carpet, paint, garden)
⭐️ Perimeter = around (fence, frame, border)

This small change can make a big difference in helping students make sense of these concepts! 🔥
